Reviving the beef ban controversy, Karnataka Congress leader Siddaramaiah, on Monday said that he was a Hindu who had not eaten beef till now, but he would consume beef if he wanted to.
Attending a public event in Tumkur district, Siddharamaiah said, “I am a Hindu. I’ve not eaten beef till now, but if I want to, I will have it. Who are you to question me?”
“Beef eaters don’t belong to just one community, even Hindus and Christians consume beef as well. I have even said it in the Karnataka assembly, once. Who are you to tell me to not eat beef?” He asked.
The congress leader also accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of building walls between religions and said that beef eaters do not belong to just one community. “They (RSS) create barriers between fellow humans.”
In January 2021, the Bhartiya Janata Party-led Karnataka government enacted the 2020 Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, which makes illegal to buy, sell, transport, slaughter, and trade all types of cattle, including cows, bulls, buffaloes and oxen.
Those who are fail to comply to this will be imprisoned for up to seven years, along with a fine between Rs 50,000 and 5 lakh.
